Tips For Youthful Skin

I'm Teresa Goehner, RN, Aesthetic Nurse at Dr. Hoffman's medical spa. As we get into the colder months of the year, I'd like to remind you to nourish your skin. One way to accomplish this is to increase your consumption of foods packed with anti-oxidant protection!

Olive Oil vs Canola Oil
Are you buying Canola oil because you think it's lower in "bad fats" than Olive Oil? The truth is, canola oil has more polyunsaturated fat than olive oil, and olive oil has more monounsaturated fat. Monounsaturated fats help maintain our skin's natural oils–that's what keeps your skin moist and soft. So, when you have a choice, pick olive oil for salads and low-heat cooking!

Tomatoes
Lycopene is a potent antioxidant that repairs skin cells and combats sun damage–a biggie here in Palo Alto and Los Gatos–and tomatoes are full of Lycopene! And did you know that there's more Lycopene in cooked tomatoes than in raw tomatoes? According to the April issue of the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry, it's true! Cooked tomatoes includes not just canned tomatoes, but pizza and tomato sauce, and tomato juice.

Green Tea
All teas contain some antioxidants (as does coffee), but green tea has the most antioxidants of all the teas. Not only that, but green tea contains the most polyphenols, which are like little warriors knocking out free radicals that contribute to skin aging! Don't like the taste of green tea? Here are some tips!

•Use loose green tea instead of tea bags–it's a milder, less bitter taste

•Don't pour boiling water over the tea leaves; instead, let cool for 30-60 seconds first

•Once you've poured the water on the leaves, wait only 1 minute and then taste. Too weak? Steep a bit longer and see if you like the taste after 2 minutes. Over-steeping makes tea bitter.

•Still don't like green-tea lover? Try this: put a flavored green tea such as peach or mango in the cup along with the green tea leaves. The addition of the flavored tea will overcome the green tea taste!

Carrots
Vitamin A is a-plenty in carrots and it's a good thing, because Vitamin A promotes great skin! Carrots also contain other fabulous nutrients such as Vitamin C, B6 and K, along with thamine, fiber, biotin and potassium! Cooked or raw, carrots are a girl's BFF: Best Food Friend!

Salmon
OK, we know that not everyone favors fish, but salmon is special! Loaded with omega-3's, salmon feeds fatty acids to your skin! It's also great for heart health! If you still hate fish no matter how good it is for you, ground flaxseeds and walnuts also pack a punch of Omage-3's.

Almonds
Vitamin E fights free radicals, and almonds have lots of Vitamin E! To get the most nutritional punch, buy them raw and keep in the freezer. Take out a handful before bed, cover with water, and in the morning the almonds will be soft and fabulous. Have you had almond butter? It makes peanut butter pale in comparison!

Water
While it's true that water isn't technically a food, if you don't drink enough of it, your skin and hair will be dryer. Your body is thirsty! Studies show that by the time you even feel a sense of thirst, you're down at least a quart! Besides nourishing your cells with pure water, drinking at least 5 glasses a day will also flush the nasties out of your system! And just because tea, coffee and soft drinks are made with water doesn't mean they're substitutes for good old pure H2O, so drink up!

Blueberries
Almost no other food packs more Vitamin A, pound for pound, in the little blueberry. Besides Vitamin A, blueberries are rich in Vitamins C and E as well as riboflavin and fiber! Eschew the fiber powders and chew blueberries instead!

While I have all kinds of fabulous prescription-strength skin treatments here at our Palo Alto and Los Gatos plastic surgery practice that will take years off your skin, don't forget to treat your skin to a good diet! Start with gradual changes and over time the combination of regular skin exfoliation, the use of a solid home regimen of prescription strength cleaners, toners and serums skin isn't just created by treatments and skin care products but also by what goes into your mouth! Making gradual dietary changes to increase good fats, eating more fruits and veggies and getting a good night's rest will go a long way to boost the appearance of your treatments!
