Did you know that SmartLipo is a liposuction method that offers terrific results with less trauma and downtime and a faster recovery than traditional liposuction?

SmartLipo uses laser technology to melt and liquefy the fat inside fat cells. It also smooths and tightens the skin afterwards -- something traditional liposuction doesn't do. SmartLipo can be used alone in small areas of fat, such as in the chin or for "touch-ups" in areas previously treated with traditional liposuction. Our surgeons also use SmartLipo along with traditional liposuction to create the very best body contouring possible.

Did you also know that over the years, liposuction has evolved into one of the safest cosmetic procedures? Liposuction was invented by a gynecologist in Italy in the mid 1970s. At first, liposuction was performed 'dry', meaning no liquid was inserted into the fatty areas prior to suctioning. The technique improved when the 'wet' technique was developed in the early 1980's. Further refinements led to the "tumescent" technique.

Tumescent means "to swell or distend," which is exactly what happens in tumescent liposuction, in which dilute solutions of local anesthetic and epinephrine are inserted into the fatty areas to be treated. This fluid both anesthetizes the areas and decreases bleeding. The procedure can often be performed while the patient is awake with minimal discomfort and quicker recovery. Most people return to work and normal activities within one to three days.

Once the tumescent fluid is infused into the fatty areas, the fat is destroyed by one of several methods. Simple suctioning, high frequency ultrasonic waves dissolution, or laser waves can all be utilized to break down the fat cells and allow the freed fat to be suctioned using very thin tubes called cannulas. SmartLipo was the first laser to be approved by the FDA to be used for fat dissolution and removal with tumescent liposuction. By utilizing SmartLipo, patients return to normal activities more rapidly than when the older methods were used alone. It is safer and provides improved results for smoother and tighter skin. Thus, SmartLipo is the procedure of choice for our practice.
