Breast Reduction
Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Daryl K. Hoffman offers breast reduction in San Jose and Palo Alto for women with very large breasts. Dr. Hoffman understands that overly large breasts can have both a physical and emotional impact on the lives of women. They can limit your ability to exercise, draw unwanted attention and create a feeling of self-consciousness, cause neck and shoulder pain, cause bra straps to cut into your skin, and cause rashes on the skin beneath your breasts.
Breast reduction reduces excess fat and glandular tissue, and tightens lax skin. Dr. Hoffman has ample experience performing breast reduction and other breast enhancement surgeries. He has even written articles and contributed to a guidebook on the topic.
In many cases, health insurance will assist in covering the costs of breast reduction surgery. The friendly staff at Dr. Hoffman's office will assist you in obtaining a health insurance coverage determination if you are a candidate for breast reduction. Breast reduction procedures may be performed while the patient is under general anesthesia. There are 2 common types of breast reduction incisions. During your consultation, Dr. Hoffman will conduct a physical examination and discuss your desired results before he recommends the type of incision to use. The options include:
Through the selected incision type, Dr. Hoffman will reduce excess fat and tissue, and tighten the stretched skin to create lighter and firmer breasts. Liposuction also can be used for fat reduction. In the great majority of cases, the nipple remains attached to its original blood and nerve supply; however, for extremely large breasts it may be necessary to remove and reposition the nipple and areola.
Results and Recovery
After your breast reduction, your breasts will be bandaged to protect the incisions and you will be given a special bra to reduce swelling, minimize discomfort and support your new shape. In approximately a week, you should be able to return to work and may resume regular exercise in several weeks. As with breast augmentation, incision lines will fade significantly with time.
After breast reduction surgery, most women feel comfortable engaging in strenuous exercise and wearing form-fitting clothes. Many of Dr. Hoffman's breast reduction patients feel a new sense of freedom and confidence after surgery.
