Tumescent Liposuction

In spite of regular exercise and a healthful diet, pockets of unwanted fat can remain on isolated areas of the body like the thighs, hips, abdomen, or chin. Dr. Daryl Hoffman offers tumescent liposuction for San Jose, Palo Alto, Campbell and other Bay Area residents as a way to effectively sculpt and improve their body contours.

A board-certified, Stanford-trained plastic surgeon, Dr. Hoffman works closely with his patients to determine which type of procedure would best address their needs and concerns. To find out more about the available options, request your consultation online or call us at  (650) 325-1118 (Palo Alto) or  (408) 371-1118 (Campbell) to schedule your appointment.

The Procedure

During tumescent liposuction surgery, also called traditional liposuction, the patient is usually awake with local anesthesia. The treatment areas are initially injected with a large volume of tumescent solution to control pain, inhibit bleeding, and saturate the fat tissue. The unwanted fat is then suctioned out of the body through a thin, hollow tube called a cannula, which is inserted into the body through tiny incisions.

Dr. Hoffman offers advanced liposuction techniques that reduce discomfort and recovery time from tumescent liposuction alone. He offers the following popular liposuction enhancement options:

  • Smartlipo™ uses a tiny laser inserted through the cannula to melt the targeted areas of fat, making them easier to remove from the body.
  • VASER® LipoSelection® transmits ultrasound energy through the cannula to liquefy the fat, allowing it to be easily suctioned out of the body.
  • Cellulaze™ reduces the appearance of cellulite by using a special laser to liquefy fat while releasing the fibrous bands of underlying tissue that give skin its dimpled appearance.

Dr. Hoffman is quick to remind patients of his San Jose-area practice that liposuction should not be used as a weight-loss method. Instead, it is most effective for patients who are at or near their ideal weight. Men and women who have good skin elasticity achieve optimum results because their skin is able to conform to their improved, slimmer shape without wrinkling or sagging.

Dr. Hoffman commonly uses liposuction to enhance other cosmetic surgery procedures, such as a tummy tuck, breast reduction, or a facelift. During their private consultation, patients are given the opportunity to discuss their cosmetic goals, ask questions, and express their concerns. In many cases, women will choose to add procedures such as a breast lift or have breast augmentation with breast implants to achieve full-body enhancement. Dr. Hoffman will then propose a unique combination of procedures that will most closely provide the desired improvements.

Recovery and Results

After your liposuction procedure, treated areas will be wrapped in compression garments to reduce swelling and bruising, and to encourage contoured results. Most patients can resume light activity within the first week after their procedure and more strenuous activity after about 3 to 4 weeks.

Areas treated with liposuction may be noticeably slimmer immediately after surgery; however, there will likely be mild swelling and bruising that may last for a few weeks. The fat cells removed with liposuction do not grow back, so any future weight gain will be concentrated in untreated areas. Patients who eat sensibly and exercise regularly can maintain their improved shape for many years.

Tumescent Liposuction FAQ

Does liposuction get rid of cellulite?

No. Cellulite is often associated with excess fat, but they are not directly linked. Cellulite is actually caused by fibrous bands of connective tissue that pull on the skin from below, causing the appearance of dimples. Fat deposits can worsen the appearance of these dimples, but they are not solely to blame. Therefore, while liposuction may reduce the appearance of cellulite a bit, it will not eliminate it altogether. Dr. Hoffman offers a minimally invasive treatment called Cellulaze to destroy the bands that cause cellulite and sufficiently reduce its appearance.

What are the advantages of traditional tumescent liposuction over other types?

Although many options exist for today’s liposuction patients, Dr. Hoffman recommends traditional tumescent liposuction in some cases. This time-tested procedure is often used in conjunction with other procedures, such as facelift surgery, because it can be performed on smaller, more targeted areas of the body. During your consultation, Dr. Hoffman will talk to you about your goals and review your options with you to help you make the best choice in technique.

How long will my results last?

You can enjoy the results of your liposuction procedure almost indefinitely by maintaining a healthy lifestyle after your surgery, including exercising and eating a nutritious, balanced diet. Once fat is physically removed from the body via liposuction, it does not grow back. However, remaining fat cells elsewhere in the body can still grow from the result of poor diet and exercise. A healthy lifestyle can help you maintain your cosmetic results and your general well-being.
