Chin liposuction recovery generally progresses day by day, from peak swelling and tightness in the first 48 hours to returning to work within a few days, with final results developing over 6 to 12 months.
As a board-certified plastic surgeon and liposuction expert, I’ve walked hundreds of patients through the procedure and seen firsthand how knowing what to expect eases anxiety about recovery. Below, I’ve broken down each stage in the same detail I share with my patients who are considering chin lipo (submental liposuction) to address a stubborn double chin.

What Happens on the Day of Chin Liposuction?
The day of your procedure is more comfortable than most patients expect. I typically perform submental liposuction using the Smartlipo® laser-assisted technique with local anesthesia. This approach uses a tiny incision beneath the chin and seals small blood vessels as it works, limiting bruising.
Traditional tumescent liposuction and VASER® ultrasonic liposuction are also options I offer, though they’re generally better suited to larger or more fibrous areas than the chin. You’ll go home the same day wearing a compression garment, with clear aftercare instructions in hand.
Days 1 to 2: What Should I Expect During the First 48 Hours?
The first 2 days are when swelling and tightness peak, so plan to keep your schedule light and your head elevated. Your chin and upper neck will feel firm and swollen, and some tenderness or numbness is normal. For optimal comfort and initial healing, I recommend applying ice packs over the compression garment, using medications as prescribed, and taking short, gentle walks to support circulation.
Days 3 to 7: When Can I Return To Work & Light Activities?
Most patients can return to work and light activities within a couple of days as swelling and other early side effects begin to improve. While I generally clear patients for desk work and errands around day 2 or 3, some patients understandably prefer to wait until visible bruising fades, which is closer to day 5 or 6.
Bruising and swelling generally begin to fade toward the end of the first week. However, this varies from patient to patient. Some experience little to no bruising, especially with laser-assisted techniques. Others may notice mild discoloration along the jawline that resolves on its own.
By days 5 to 7, tightness usually eases, but you should continue to wear your compression garment as directed.
Weeks 2 to 3: When Can I Resume Exercise?
Most patients can gradually resume exercise and more strenuous activities within 2 to 3 weeks, with my clearance. Your individual timeline will depend on how your recovery is progressing.
Months 1 to 12: When Will I See My Final Chin Liposuction Results?
Chin liposuction results continue to improve for several months as residual swelling resolves and the underlying tissues settle. Although you’ll see changes relatively early in your recovery, your final jawline contour typically emerges gradually between 6 and 12 months after surgery.

Is Chin Lipo Permanent?
Yes. Once fat cells are removed from beneath the chin, they don’t return, so results are considered permanent. That said, significant weight gain can still cause remaining fat cells to expand, and aging will continue to affect skin laxity over time. Maintaining a stable weight can help preserve your results for the long term.
Key Recovery Tips After Chin Liposuction
A smooth recovery begins with choosing an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon to guide you through every phase of your procedure and concludes with closely adhering to your aftercare protocols. Beyond that, I recommend:
- Wearing your compression garment as directed
- Sleeping with your head elevated
- Staying hydrated
- Eating a protein-rich diet
- Avoiding alcohol and excess sodium
