4 Effective Ways to Battle a Belly Pooch (Tummy Tuck vs. Liposuction & More) (Updated 2023)

Woman contemplating tummy tuck procedure.

The midsection is one of the most common problem areas for men and women alike. Even with the best diet and exercise efforts, stubborn fat has a habit of hanging around in this tough-to-treat region. Fortunately, you have more options today than ever for removing excess fat to achieve the firm, sculpted look many of us strive for.

Liposuction is one option I recommend to my Palo Alto and San Jose, CA, patients, often in combination with a tummy tuck. But not all liposuction surgeries are the same, and there are some cases where lipo is not the best approach. In this blog post, I’ll discuss a few tummy toning techniques that can help you achieve the flat, firm midsection you have always wanted.

1. Tumescent Liposuction

Also known as “traditional liposuction,” this technique liquefies fat tissue using a tumescent solution of saline (saltwater), epinephrine (adrenaline), and lidocaine (local anesthesia). This solution makes the fat easy to remove and reduces discomfort, bleeding, and bruising.

2. Smartlipo®

Also called “laser lipo,” this approach uses the power of lasers to disrupt fat and stimulate collagen production in the skin. Smartlipo is especially popular as it offers a faster recovery and a subtle skin-tightening boost.

3. VASER® Ultrasonic Liposuction

VASER lipo breaks up fat using ultrasound energy, causing fewer disturbances to blood vessels and other tissues in the area. It works wonderfully for breaking up fat in both large and small areas.

4. Tummy Tuck

If you are looking to both remove fat and tighten the skin and muscles of your abdomen, a tummy tuck is likely the best solution for you. This body contouring surgery removes unwanted skin and fat while repairing damaged abdominal muscles (diastasis recti).

Pairing liposuction with a tummy tuck creates even more dramatic contouring results. Many women combine these procedures with breast enhancement surgery to achieve a total body transformation called a mommy makeover.

How Do the Costs of Liposuction Techniques Compare?

Is traditional liposuction more affordable than VASER or Smartlipo? Ultimately, there are only minor differences in pricing. Each of these techniques falls into a similar price range.

Because liposuction is such a customized procedure, the best way to determine your pricing is to come in for a private consultation. After assessing your concerns and talking over your goals, I will provide you with a personalized pricing estimate to inform your next steps.

While cost is an important consideration, it’s best to choose whichever approach will give you the results you desire most efficiently and effectively. When you invest in yourself with cosmetic surgery, you deserve the best possible results, whichever technique that involves.
